5 Memorable Ways for Seniors to Celebrate the Holiday Season

The holiday season is a special time of year. It’s a time for coming together with loved ones, finding cheer in the midst of the coldest winter days, and connecting with our cultural and spiritual traditions. So whether you plan to celebrate with family, longtime friends, or new friends at your senior living community, we hope you have a joyous holiday season.

Need a little inspiration to help make your holidays special? Here are five memorable ways for seniors to celebrate the holiday season.

1. Look at Light Displays

There’s something about the twinkling holiday light displays that brings instant cheer on a dark winter’s night. So set aside a time to enjoy all the holiday light displays.

The City of Whitehorse posts neighborhood maps each year so you can go on a self-guided holiday lights tour. And because so many neighborhoods join in the fun, you can spread out your tours over the holiday season and view a different neighborhood each time you go!

2. Go Caroling

Want to spread some holiday cheer of your own? Gather a group of friends, choose your favorite holiday songs, and go caroling!

Prefer to listen to carols instead? Head to the Yukon Arts Centre on December 1 or 2 at 7:30 p.m. for the Whitehorse Community Choir’s Christmas Concert. Tickets cost $25 and are available at the Yukon Arts Centre or through yukontickets.com.

3. Have a Card-Writing Party

Sending cards during the holiday season is a simple way of letting others know you’re thinking of them. And it’s tons of fun, too! So why not take your card writing to the next level with a card-writing party?

You can make your card-writing party as simple or elaborate as you like. For instance, you and your guests can simply bring cards and write them together while enjoying one another’s company. Or everyone can contribute supplies like blank cards, stickers, ribbons, and stamps. Then, spend your party creating unique cards that are truly a work of art!

4. Make Cookies

Holiday cookies are a tradition in many families. They’re lovely to look at, delicious to eat, and fun to make! Plus, making cookies to share is always a memorable way to celebrate the holiday season.

So whip up a few batches of your favorite cookie recipes. Or purchase premade sugar or gingerbread cookies if you don’t have an oven. Then, have fun decorating them any way you choose!

5. Share a Meal

In most cultures, a holiday meal is a central part of celebrating the holiday season. And it’s often one of the most memorable parts of the holidays, too. That’s because it provides an opportunity to spend time with loved ones and, perhaps, even meet new friends

So this holiday season, make plans to share a meal with loved ones. Whether it’s joining friends in the dining room, reuniting with family members, or meeting for fellowship with others of your faith, sharing a meal is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season.
