4 Reasons to Tour Independent Living Communities During the Holidays

As you plan your holiday festivities, touring independent living communities may be the farthest thing from your mind. But the holidays are actually a perfect time to visit! Here are four reasons to tour independent living communities during the holidays.

1. You’ll See How the Community Celebrates Special Occasions

One of the most obvious reasons to tour independent living communities during the holidays is it gives you a chance to see how the community celebrates special occasions. And if the holidays mean a lot to you, that can be an important factor in whether you would enjoy living in the community.

So visit and take note of things like whether and how the community is decorated, any special events for residents, and which holidays are celebrated. If you get the chance, talk to the residents about whether they are happy with how holidays are celebrated, too. It’ll help you know whether you feel welcome and able to celebrate in a way you enjoy.

2. It’s a Convenient Time to Tour With Family

Many people choose an independent living community with input from their family. You may wish to move close to your family members so it’s easy to see them often. And your family members may have concerns about where you will live. They want to ensure you move to a community where you’ll be happy and safe.

Since families often come together for the holidays, it’s a convenient time to tour with your family. You won’t need to arrange a separate time to get together around work or school obligations. Instead, you can simply plan to tour independent living communities while you’re already together.

3. You’ll Get a Glimpse of How the Community Is Maintained

Because so many holidays occur in the winter, it’s a great time to see how the independent living community is maintained. Pay close attention to things like how well walkways are cleared of snow and ice and whether there are trip hazards like loose rugs or cords.

Check for important safety features, too. For example, see whether there are features like grab bars and rails to help with stability. And take note of how well the community seems to be lit. Additionally, remember to look for critical safety measures like fire alarms, emergency escape routes, and security.

4. The Holidays Are a Wonderful Opportunity to Check Out the Food Service

One of the best things about the holidays is all the delicious food. So be sure to check out what’s on offer at the independent living community. And if possible, have a meal with some of the residents. It’s a good way to see whether the community feels like a good fit for you.

Additionally, remember that holidays are often when special effort is made to cook more elaborate meals. So if the holiday meal seems lackluster, you may not enjoy everyday meals there, either. On the other hand, if you’re impressed with the meal, you may love dining at the community every day!

The holidays are the perfect time to see how well you would fit in at a particular independent living community. You have the chance to experience the festivities, sample the food, and maybe even make new friends. So this holiday season, consider setting time aside to tour independent living communities. You may just find your new home!
